Start Times

There will be a single start for all boats.
The warning signal will be at 1845.

Rules

This series will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.

Handicaps will be calculated as detailed in the Monday-night Handicapping Synopsis ▼.

Sailing Instructions

The Sailing Instructions ▼ and any additional documents are available either in the clubhouse or downloadable from this web site. Any changes to the Notice of Race will be incorporated into this online version and posted as a notice to competitors.

The Official Notice Board

The official notice board is in the clubhouse's enclosed porch. Notices will be mirrored on the web site within 24 hours of being posted.

In a Class of its Own

There are no class rules, no measurements are necessary and no certificates are required.

Carrying on from previous years will be the rolling-average handicaps based on a boat's individual performance. This is of great benefit to the casual cruiser, as you can race your boat as-is without having to conform to an ideal for your boat.

No Spinnakers

Spinnakers will not be allowed on Monday nights. This emphasis on easy boat handling is to encourage new and casual racers to come out and experience competitive sailboat racing.

Time-on-Time Handicapping

Corrected times calculations need an arbitrary choice of one of the boats as scratch. Your corrected time is a prediction of the elapsed time you should have expected were you to be sailing the scratch boat instead of your own. Each boat divides its elapsed time by its own handicap --- everyone then multiplies this fraction by the common scratch handicap. Reported race results will allow you to select your own boat as scratch (by clicking on the table row) and show competitors' corrected times relative to you.

Rolling-average handicaps will be computed using imputed time-on-time handicaps from the previous seven races, excluding the two extremes, then computing the geometric mean of the remaining five.

An ECPHRF JOG handicap of 200^s/_mi. is mapped to an initial time-on-time handicap of 1000^s/_mi. — boats new to the fleet should read the Monday-night Handicapping Synopsis ▼ document.

Registration

Please fill in the online registration form. Although boats can join the fleet at any time, online registration is needed to have results recorded. New boats are required to register a week in advance of receiving their initial handicap; when registering make note of any special circumstances that would influence your handicap.

RC Duty

Any competitor may be called upon to perform RC duties, dates of which will be published well in advance. Comprehensive RC instructions will be available in the on-water kit and ashore from the SPSC web site.

Racing Area

The racing area shall be centred at a point 42°20.406'N 82°50.231'W, one nautical mile at 25° magnetic from outside the Pike Creek channel on Lake St. Clair. Marks are thee quarters of a nautical mile from the centre point and arrayed in a regular octagon with mark 8 pinned to magnetic north (using magnetic variation of 7.66°W).

Marks are white can buoys.

Start & Finish Area

All courses will start and finish at Mark 4.

Selective Midpoint Scoring

Mondays will use the Selective Midpoint System with a 50% participation requirement (RC duty does not count as participation). A boat's race score will be the number of boats beaten less the number of boats lost to. This is a signed number that splits the difference between low-point and high-point scoring. A boat's series score will be the average of all the race scores in which she competed. Rules RRS A3, A5.1, A6 and A10 will apply.

Rum Trophy

The top three competitors will be engraved on perpetual Rum Trophy which remains on display in the SPSC clubhouse.
